Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan warns NGOs against trying to manipulate government, judiciary through propaganda.

International non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working against the interests of Pakistan will no longer be allowed to operate in the country, warned Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan on Friday.

“Any international NGO found involved in anti-Pakistan activities will have their offices shut down,” he said, while commenting on the closure of Save the Children’s offices in Islamabad. Save the Children, which works with the government to develop better delivery systems for health, nutrition, education and child welfare, has been alleged to help the CIA recruit Dr. Shakeel Afridi to find Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. The extremist was discovered in Abbottabad and killed in a U.S. Special Forces raid in 2011.

During his press briefing, Khan said that Save the Children was not the only NGO working against the interests of Pakistan. “Some international NGOs, with the help of a local NGO, uploaded childhood pictures of Shafqat Hussain and falsely claimed he was underage when he murdered a 7-year-old child,” he told journalists. “Law enforcement agencies have investigated and found Shafqat was 23 years old when he was arrested,” he added, in an apparent reference to Justice Project Pakistan and Reprieve, who have maintained Hussain was coerced into a confession while only 14 years old.

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court dismissed an appeal to investigate Hussain’s age at the time of his sentencing, with Chief Justice Nasir-ul-Mulk saying: “This matter has to come to an end someday.”

Minister Khan said the government and the judiciary would not accept any propaganda designed to pressure them into acting for the benefit of NGOs. “Executions will continue for both terrorists and murderers as per Pakistan’s judicial system and Constitution,” he added.
